TaxJar raised its prices. Work out which half you were paying for
·8 min read
How much does TaxJar cost in 2026?
TaxJar publishes two plans: Starter at 39 USD a month or from 419 USD a year, and Professional at 99 USD a month or from 1,069 USD a year, both scaling with order volume. Automated filing is charged on top, at 50 USD a return on Starter and 55 USD on Professional.
A TaxJar price increase is an annoying email and a genuinely useful question, because renewal is the one moment anybody audits what a tool is actually for. TaxJar does two separate jobs: it watches where you are approaching a registration duty, and it files the returns once you have one. Almost nobody uses both halves equally, and the half you use decides whether the new price is fine or absurd.
In this article
- TaxJar's published 2026 prices, read from TaxJar's own pages, with the date they were read
- The one number that tells you which half you were buying: how many states you have enrolled in AutoFile
- Why the watching half costs a fraction of the filing half, and what you give up by splitting them
- What a US filing suite never covered in the first place, if any of your sales left the country
- How to move the watching half across in an afternoon, without cancelling anything first
What the new prices actually are
Read from TaxJar's own pricing page and support article on 12 August 2026, both linked at the foot of this post. If you are reading this much later, check them again rather than trusting the numbers here.
The published figures
| Starter | Professional | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | 39 USD | 99 USD |
| Annual, entry tier | from 419 USD | from 1,069 USD |
| AutoFile, per return | 50 USD | 55 USD |
Both plans scale above those floors with order volume, so the annual figures are where the entry tier starts rather than what a busy store pays. AutoFile is billed per return on top of the subscription, in every tier.
What moved
The comparison people are reacting to is against 2025, when Starter was widely listed at 19 USD a month and AutoFile at 30 to 35 USD a return. Those older figures are no longer on TaxJar's site, so they are reported here as history rather than cited.
Roughly, then: the entry subscription about doubled, and each filed return costs something like half again as much. Whether that is a small change or a large one depends entirely on how many returns you file.
Which half were you paying for
There is one number that settles this, and it is in your TaxJar account rather than in any comparison table: how many states you have actually enrolled in AutoFile.
If the answer is several
Then you are buying filing, the new price is the price of filing, and the rest of this post is not for you. Ten returns a quarter at 50 USD is 2,000 USD a year in AutoFile alone, and the subscription beside it is a rounding error. Compare it against what a bookkeeper charges, not against a monitoring tool.
The honest advice at that point is to keep it, or to price the same work with an accountant. Nothing on this site files a return, so nothing on this site replaces that.
If the answer is zero or one
Then you have been paying a filing suite to tell you where you stand. That is a real job and it is the harder half to see, but it is not the expensive half to do, and 419 USD a year is a lot for it.
This is the common case for software sellers. You signed up when a state was approaching, you registered in one, and the tool has been a dashboard ever since. The renewal is the first time anyone looks at that.
The part a US filing suite was never covering
This matters more than the price for a certain kind of seller, and it is invisible in any feature table that only lists US states.
Your sales probably left the country
TaxJar is built around US economic nexus. If you sell software or digital products, a slice of your revenue almost certainly went to the EU, the UK, Canada or Australia, and those regimes have their own registration lines with nothing to do with a US state.
- European UnionVAT€10,000Current or previous calendar year, EU-wide combined
- United KingdomVAT£90,000Rolling 12 months
- AustraliaGSTA$75,000Current or projected 12 months
The three most commonly crossed by a seller who thought of themselves as US-only. The EU is one line across all member states under OSS; the UK and Australia are their own.
The direction of that error is the bad one. A tool that watches only US states will keep saying you are clear about everywhere it looks, and say nothing at all about the places it does not.
And if you are established outside the EU, there is no line to cross
The EU's 10,000 EUR OSS threshold applies to sellers established inside the EU. A seller established outside it owes VAT from the first euro of B2C sales into any member state. No amount of US-state monitoring surfaces that, because it is not a threshold.
Check where you stand on these two
Your sales into each, in its own currency. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Moving the watching half across
An afternoon, and it does not require touching your TaxJar account at all until you are satisfied the numbers agree.
The order that keeps you safe
- 1Check your exposure before signing up for anythingExport a sales CSV and drop it into the free threshold check on this site. It runs in your browser and the file is never uploaded, so you get the answer before you have an account anywhere.
- 2Connect the sources money actually arrives throughA read-only key at Stripe, Paddle, Polar, Lemon Squeezy or Shopify, plus CSV for PayPal, invoices and marketplace payouts. Every source is added together rather than chosen between, which is the part a single-processor tool cannot do.
- 3Reconcile one full month against TaxJar before changing anythingThe totals will not match exactly, and the reasons are worth understanding: marketplace and merchant-of-record sales are sorted by who made the supply here, and a US filing suite generally treats them all as yours.
- 4Decide about filing separately, and lastRegistrations you already hold still need returns. Either keep AutoFile for those specific states, or hand them to an accountant. Neither decision is urgent once the watching half is somewhere you trust.
What you give up
Filed returns, calculated rates at checkout, and exemption certificates. This product does none of the three and is not going to. If you need them, you need a filing suite, and the price of one is the price of one.
What you get instead is the boundary drawn honestly: 76 jurisdictions watched with the authority and the read-date published for each, a warning at 75 percent rather than a notification after the fact, and no per-return fee, because there are no returns.
Three things worth checking while you are in there
Whether your home state is being watched
Some monitoring tools exclude the state or country you are established in by design, on the reasoning that you already know about it. For a seller whose largest market is where they live, that is the line most likely to be crossed first and the one nobody is watching.
Whether your Amazon and Etsy sales are being counted correctly
A marketplace sale leaves you as the seller, so roughly half the US states count it toward your own threshold and half do not, while the EU and UK never do. Counting them the same way everywhere overstates your exposure in some states and understates it in others.
Whether anything you sell is actually taxable there
California's economic-nexus threshold counts tangible personal property, so hosted software has been invisible to it. That changes on 1 January 2027 under SB 122. New York's threshold reads almost identically and does count software, because state law defines prewritten software as tangible property.
Frequently asked questions
How much is TaxJar now?
TaxJar publishes Starter at 39 USD a month, from 419 USD a year, and Professional at 99 USD a month, from 1,069 USD a year, with both scaling above those floors by order volume. AutoFile is separate, at 50 USD a return on Starter and 55 USD on Professional. Those figures were read from TaxJar's own pages on 12 August 2026.
When does the TaxJar price increase apply to me?
Check the renewal notice TaxJar sent you, because that is the only source that binds your account. TaxJar has not published an announcement of the change, and while several third-party write-ups report that existing month-to-month customers keep legacy pricing until 1 October 2026, we cannot verify that against anything TaxJar publishes and will not repeat it as fact.
Is TaxesRadar a drop-in replacement for TaxJar?
No, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise. TaxJar files your state returns and calculates rates at checkout. This product does neither. It replaces the monitoring half only: knowing where you are approaching a registration duty, across 76 jurisdictions rather than US states alone, with the source and read-date published for every rule.
Can I run both?
Yes, and for anyone with active registrations it is the sensible arrangement. Keep filing where you are registered, whether through AutoFile or an accountant, and use the radar for everywhere you are not yet registered. They answer different questions, and only one of them gets more expensive as you grow.
What if I have already crossed a threshold and did not notice?
Registration is backdated to the day you crossed, not the day you noticed. You owe the tax you should have charged on every sale since, plus interest and usually a penalty. Run the free check first: it replays your sales chronologically and gives you the crossing date, which is the number an accountant needs to size the problem.
The renewal is the useful part
Whatever you decide, the price change has done you one favour: it has made you look at a tool you had stopped looking at. Find out how many states you file in, find out whether anything you sell went abroad, and buy the half you are actually using.
